Frequently Asked Questions

Pre-Procedure

Does it hurt?

This question is the most frequently asked and the most difficult to answer. I have heard many different answers from every client I have worked with. In order to produce the best results with minimal discomfort to my clients I use two different 5% lidocaine topical anesthetics. The first is applied after approving the shape of the brows. This anesthetic stays on for 20 minutes. As I begin working I continually apply a second topical anesthetic to make sure there is minimal discomfort. It is important that this process is easy and comfortable as possible. So when asked is it painful I try to make sure my clients understand that there maybe some discomfort but I do everything possible to lessen it. With that being said, I can tell you I have heard many times “Oh this is not as bad as I thought it was going to be!”

How do you come up with the correct shape?

The proper shape is achieved by first discussing what you want. I then take measurements and see what lengths and shapes actually fit your facial structure. If the result you are looking for is possible I begin to shape it out. Otherwise I show you why it wouldn’t work and what will work. After drawing one brow I ask you to hold up a mirror and tell me what you think and what you would like to change, if anything. After initial approval I begin on the second brow. Once both brows are drawn on I have you look again in the mirror. We will continue to tweak it until you are completely happy and approve the shape.

How do you choose the correct color?

Using the Fitzpatrick Scale system, which is a method used to determine skin types and undertones, I begin to look for not only the skin complexion but the undertone of the skin. Believe it or not the undertone of the skin is a lot more important than the skin complexion! Once I determine where you fall under the Fitzpatrick Scale I chose the pigment, or a mixture or pigments to get the one that closely matches your hair color and works with your skin.

What happens if I am unhappy with the results?

Every experience is different when it comes to having something so personal and so important done. I understand that eyebrows are the frame to the face. That is why I take my time to get the shape and color perfect for your facial structure and complexion. I do not begin working until I get approval for the shape and color. This is a very important part of the process and cannot be rushed. As I begin working I give you a handheld mirror and I have you look to make sure you understand the process and are happy with how it’s looking so far.

Another thing that is important to understand is that everyone’s reaction to such a life changing event can be different. Although most women are extremely satisfied and happy with their decision there maybe some that get an initial shock with how different they appear. This can turn into fear or discontent. It may not be because it wasn’t what they wanted or approved, but because they are not used to seeing themselves this way. I try to reassure them that it will grow on them as the days go by. The color may seem too dark or the shape may seem very different than what they had before but this is why I wait for complete approval before I begin the process. I remind them that the color will fade after it is healed by 30-40% and will appear more natural. When I come across someone that is unhappy (which is not very often at all) I try to remind them that they need to be patient with the process. I myself have been in their shoes and I know how important it is to understand that this process is life changing but the results are well worth it!

Post-Procedure

Can I wet my eyebrows?

No. Water has properties that make the pigment fade, sometimes completely. This is why we avoid wetting the eyebrow area during the healing process. Dry healing is important in order to achieve crisp, clean strokes that are long lasting. Although it seems impossible to avoid wetting your eyebrows there are simple techniques that you can incorporate into your day to day life to make this process easier. We will go over some of these techniques during your visit.

Is Scabbing normal after the first visit? Why does it occur?

YES! Scabbing is definitely a normal part of the healing process.

Microblading requires a technician to make a small cut into the skin to the level of the dermal epi-dermal junction. It is done this way because this layer of the skin is ideal for long lasting results, but also not deep enough to cause scarring or a permanent tattoo.

Just as a small cut on your finger will scab after a while, your eyebrows will scab after your visit. It is the body’s natural reaction to protect and heal the area that was worked on.

With this being said, please consider that everyone’s healing process is different depending on skin type, complexion, and lifestyle.

It is very important not to pick at, scratch, scrub or peel the scabs. No matter how uncomfortable or itchy it may feel or how crazy you may think you look you need to be patient with it. It can result in loss of pigment.

Is it ok if the scabs fall off?

Yes. The scabs will fall off on their own. It is important to let the process happen naturally. Picking at the scabs will not help the process. It will only make it worse. You will not only lose pigment that will require a more extensive touch up but you can cause an infection.

How long does the scabbing last?

Scabbing usually starts around day 5 after your visit and persists through day 10 but it can be longer depending on variables such as skin type, complexion, and lifestyle.

If you had shading done to your brows in addition to microblading then the scabbing process might start earlier and last a little bit later.

Should I pick my scabs?

NO! I cannot stress enough how important it is to leave the scabs alone.

You should not pick or pull at your scabs under any circumstance.

If you pick off your scabs then you may pull out the pigment along with the scab. This can result in a longer more extensive touch up since new strokes will have to be introduced into the skin.

You MUST let your scabs fall off naturally no matter how crazy you may think you look or how uncomfortable and itchy it feels. Trust me, patience is a virtue. The end result will make it all worth it.

If you let the skin heal naturally it will “let go” of the pigment through the process.

It is normal that about 10-15% of the pigment will fall out or fade during the initial healing process. This is why a touch up is required after 4-8 weeks.

What if my eyebrows look patchy?

Your brows WILL look patchy throughout the healing process. It is important to understand this and mentally prepare yourself for the weeks to come. Not all parts of the scabs will fall off at the same which is why you get a patchy and uneven appearance. It is a normal part of the process and as uncomfortable as it may feel to be seen this way you must think ahead and remind yourself it is all for the greater good.

Why do my eyebrows look faded?

It is normal for your brows to fade slightly prior to your touch-up.

On average most people retain about 85% of their brows after their first appointment as long as they follow all of the aftercare instructions.

People who pick their scabs off prematurely or do not follow the after care instructions properly may only have a 40-50% retention. This means the touch-up will take much longer, sometimes from square one.

What if my brows don't stay after the healing process?

Although fading is a normal part of the process, fully faded brows are a sign that either something didn’t work in your after care instructions or the strokes were not introduced deep enough into the skin. This is why touch-ups are crucial. If your brows faded completely after the healing process then you will need to start all over during the touch-up. We will need to discuss the after care instructions again and come up with an alternative so that this does not occur again.

How to Retain your Pigment & Your Results

As long as you follow your aftercare instructions and avoid picking your scabs off your healing should be normal and you will have optimal results.

Just make sure that you trust the process. I know how difficult it may be to live with very dark or patchy brows for a few days but it will all be worth it. Nothing worth having comes easy. The same goes with this.
